So, when St. Patrick’s Day rolls around I go through pretty much the same routine. I decide I’m not going to do something, then make last-minute plans, then realize I have nothing green to wear and freak out.
Accessories:If you don’t have much green in your traditional wardrobe, why not wear your favorite ensemble and complement it with green accessories. I found a host of necklaces, bracelets, rings and earrings at Lex’s of Carytown with prices ranging from $10 for a cocktail ring to $36 for a chunky green-and-silver necklace and earring set. If you want to sport a little black dress, pair it with green Ted Baker peep-toe pumps, $138.50, and a Monica purse, $59.50 from Eurotrash. The minty green Kersh sweater, $69.50, would be a nice statement over black skinny jeans and a tank top. For those heading to Shamrock the Block, you might want to top off your coat with an affordable green scarf like this one from Target.
Apparel: If you’re going to buy something green to wear, go all the way with a flirty dress. Fab’rik has plenty of bargain-priced options, including this jersey Kelly green number you’ll be certain to wear again and a again.
Makeup: I also like topping my look off with some shimmery St. Patrick-toned eye makeup. My favorites are Urban Decay Eyeshadow in Urb all over the lid and Mildew in the crease. Both are available at Sephora.
Subtle Patterns
Both Maggie Gyllenhaal and Rachel McAdams pulled off patterned gowns this year, and I plan to do the same when sundress season rolls around. Slightly tropical or watercolor-inspired patterns in tones that aren’t drastically bright can make an elegant, stylish statement for casual or formal situations.
Blue as the New Black
Mariah Carey and Gabourey Sidibe both showed up in stunning shades of midnight blue. I loved it because the shade was still dark and slimming, but it provided a nice change from the little black dress. When choosing this style for spring, look for anything from an everyday jersey dress to throw on when you’re in a rush to a cocktail dress that’ll make you stand out in a crowd.
Muted Metallics
Although the shinier the better is usually my motto, I loved the way Sandra Bullock, Amanda Seyfried and Kate Winslet managed to pull off muted metallic gowns that looked glamorous but not over the top. I’m thinking I’ll try and find a muted metallic skirt to pair with a black tank top and sandals for a similarly elegant look that possesses just the right amount of shine.
The Return of the One-Shoulder
After experiencing a lot of popularity in the early 2000s, the one-shoulder look seemed to fall off the map. I’ve always loved this style, finding it both modern and Grecian at the same time. Last night, both Sigourney Weaver and Molly Ringwald sported one-shouldered gowns, which reawakened my hopes that I’ll be able to find some summer dresses with similar styles this year. I particularly loved Tina Fey’s vintage-inspired frock, which combined the flattering sweetheart-inspired neckline with the one-shoulder cut. My fingers are crossed that this look will show up at boutiques in Richmond.
Sleek Hair
While most of us tend to pair up-dos with red-carpet attire, this year Sandra Bullock and Kate Winslet both wore their hair down and sleekly styled. I thought the look provided a nice contrast to some of the other extremely styled coiffures of the evening. I know when I look at pictures of myself, I often think my face looks better when I have my hair down as opposed to styled away from my face. These ladies may inspire me to wear my hair sleek and ironed at my next fancy affair.
Bright Lips
Again, pulling from Sandra Bullock's look, sometimes a subtle eye and a brightly pigmented pout really stand out in pictures. Often when I'm getting ready for a big night, I go with a neutral lip and smoky eye, then wonder why I look washed out in photos later. I'm going to try to keep in mind that sometimes a natural eye and colorful lip brings more warmth to the rest of the face, making for lasting images.
